50 years after the coup in Argentina

50 years after the coup in Argentina

Half a century after the beginning of the darkest period in our history, the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) reaffirms its unwavering commitment to Memory, Truth and Justice.

On March 24, the 50th anniversary of the civic-military coup in Argentina, we were present in the streets with special live coverage from the vicinity of the historic Plaza de Mayo. Throughout the march, we spoke with human rights leaders, academics, and demonstrators, gathering key testimonies that will be part of a special broadcast and an exclusive CLACSO audiovisual production.

We share the full agenda of commemorative activities that the CLACSO Network is promoting for these days.

We invite you to join panel discussions on the future of our democracies, face-to-face visual training workshops, and the launch of a new call for essays.

Furthermore, we share the excitement of our upcoming tributes: the inauguration of the exhibition "Images of Memory" and the presentation of awards to key figures and institutions in the defense of life, such as Nobel Peace Prize winner Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF), and the embassies that provided asylum during state terrorism.

The activities take place in the Plaza, at our headquarters, and in the spaces for reflection where we await you to continue building the future of Latin America and the Caribbean without forgetting our past.

Call for Essays

50 years after the civic-military coup in Argentina (1976-2026). Challenges to memory and democracy in the current Latin American and Caribbean context

CLACSO, with the support of various universities and national organizations, launched an open call for original essays that, 50 years after the civic-military coup in Argentina, critically analyze the relationship between historical memory and the current political situation, understanding memory as a tool for challenging narratives and projecting more democratic and just futures. The initiative seeks to connect past and present to reflect on the challenges to democracy in Argentina, Latin America, and the Caribbean in the face of the rise of authoritarian and denialist discourses.

Agenda of activities of the member centers of the CLACSO Network

As part of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the civic-military coup in Argentina (1976-2026), some member centers that make up the CLACSO network promote and carry out an extensive commemorative program throughout the month of March.

Embroiderers of Memory

This short documentary recovers those practices that, from the intimate and the collective, sustain memory as a political and affective act in Argentina.

Voices and sounds of the Plaza de las Madres

Fifty years after the civic-military coup, forty-nine years after the first march of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo, these are the voices of those courageous women who, in front of the cameras of Dutch television during the 1978 World Cup, demanded to know where their sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters were, whom the military disappeared in the darkest night of modern Argentina, accompanied by the testimonies of Vera Jarach and Norita Cortiñas, among others.
