The changes experienced in recent years in Latin American societies regarding female participation in the labor market, the aging process, and family transformations invite us to reflect on the social organization of care in changing contexts.
Recently, analyses and empirical research from academia on the topic of care have expanded significantly: development of new concepts such as the social organization of care, studies on the configuration of the demand and supply of care, research on the links between female migration and care, analyses of public policies, studies on care practices in different generations, surveys on social representations of care, among many others.
Added to this is the expansion of care policies in Latin America, for which it is necessary to have people trained in this subject in order to contribute to the incorporation of the gender perspective in the design, implementation and evaluation of policies.
The objective of the specialization is to:
- To provide theoretical tools that allow for solid training in the relationship between gender and care, and its main debates and conceptual tensions.
- To provide knowledge about the advances in empirical research carried out in the region and its main contributions
- To train students in the design and analysis of public policies so that they are able to make contributions that allow the incorporation of a gender perspective into the issue of care.
The Specialization and the International Course are aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students; teachers at all levels; activists and members of trade union organizations, social movements and political parties; public officials; press workers; members and managers of non-governmental organizations and professionals interested in the study and implementation of care policies in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The Specialization in Care Policies with a Gender Perspective will last 12 months and requires the following for accreditation: an international course and two optional virtual seminars from the curriculum; a writing support workshop; and the preparation of a final monograph.
The international course will last 8 months and requires, for its accreditation, the completion and approval of a final project, in addition to participation in at least 80% of the activities and tasks proposed by the teachers.
The specialization and international course will take place between September 2021 and August 2022
Students in the specialization and international course will have the support of academic tutors who will accompany them through the virtual seminars and guide them in completing their final projects.
Once the seminars have concluded, students will have four months to submit their final project. If they still need to complete a credit, they will also have four months to do so.
The specialization and international course are certified by CLACSO and FLACSO Brazil.
The specialization certifies 360 hours/chair of work; the international course 90 hours/chair.
CLARIFICATION: Those who enroll in the full specialization should not enroll in the International Course separately.The online seminars will be offered in both Spanish and Portuguese. Similarly, the course materials may be provided in either of the two official languages of the course. Student contributions to the discussion forums may also be in these languages. The final research paper may be written in Spanish, Portuguese, or English.

"Care policies with a gender perspective"
Summary: The course will address key discussions and analyses surrounding the topic of care from a gender perspective. Throughout the lectures, participants will explore the debates and conceptual challenges regarding the content and scope of care, as well as the link between care and welfare systems, citizenship and rights, and analyses and research on migration and care.

Summary: This course will introduce students to the various definitions of care and will explore reflections on the ethics of care; the links between gender theory and care; and different dimensions of care, among other topics. It will address perspectives that recognize care as work associated with love and female identity, as well as those that define it as work, both paid and unpaid, and whether or not it can be considered equivalent to other types of work. The course will also examine the methodological challenges and considerations for measuring care. It will cover qualitative and quantitative methodological approaches to care in different countries of the region. Finally, it will explore the challenges of quantitatively measuring care based on the contributions of the region's Time Use Surveys and their main challenges.

Summary: This course proposes to explore care as a component of social well-being, and how it is provided and distributed within different welfare systems. This connects it to discussions on public policy and the right to care. The course will cover the concept of the social organization of care, analyses of the supply and demand for care, family care arrangements and strategies, and studies of the social representations of care.
Coordination: Eleonor Faur (National University of San Martín, Argentina)
Summary: The conference will focus on the impacts of migration on the social organization of childcare and care for dependent persons, both in countries of origin and destination, and will analyze studies at the national and regional levels. Discussions on global care chains will be examined, and numerous research projects on this topic from Latin America will be presented.
Coordination: Gender Affairs Division - ECLAC
Summary: This course will present paradigmatic or prominent cases from countries in the region related to the development of their public care policies. The course will be approached through a comparative analysis of public policies concerning families, social protection, care, life course, and well-being from a gender perspective in different countries of the region.
Coordination: Valentina Perrota (University of the Republic, Uruguay)
Summary: The workshop is a training space designed to guide the development of the final monograph for the specialization. It will support students in defining their object of analysis, translating it into a viable research problem, constructing a work plan, developing argumentative frameworks, and establishing analytical conclusions. These tasks will be carried out individually and collectively through peer exchange and with the workshop instructor, following a discussion forum format. The workshop's objective is to produce a draft of the final specialization paper. The final monograph may be written in Spanish, Portuguese, or English.

The accreditation and certification of the Specialization and the International Course will be carried out by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) and the Latin American Faculty of Social Sciences (FLACSO Brazil).
The training proposals are aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate university students; teachers at all levels; activists and members of trade union organizations, social movements and political parties; public officials and operators in the legal field, journalists, communicators and press workers; members and managers of non-governmental organizations and professionals interested in the subject.

Registration will be open between July 8 and September 21.
Upon completion of the registration process, you will receive a confirmation in your email.
If any of the mandatory training sessions are owed, in all cases, an additional amount must be paid in order to retake said credit.
If the student decides not to enroll in the Specialization or International Course before its formal start date, they may request a refund of their tuition fees. CLACSO will retain the equivalent of 10% for administrative costs.
Exceptional criteria: In exceptional cases, and within the first two months of the specialization, students may request to withdraw from the cohort and rejoin the following year. In all cases, the reasons for the request must be submitted in writing. No requests will be accepted after two months from the start of the course.
If the student decides not to enroll in the specialization or international course before its formal start date, they may request a tuition refund. CLACSO will retain the equivalent of 10% for administrative costs. No refunds will be issued after the course has begun.
Classes will begin in September 2021 and will conclude in August 2022.

You must pass the International Course, two (2) elective Virtual Seminars, the methodological workshop and complete the final integrative work.
To obtain the Specialization degree, you must complete a final monograph. The methodological workshop is mandatory and aims to support you in completing this final project.

The specialization has a total workload of 360 hours and the international course 90 hours.
The certificate of completion will be sent digitally and is completely free of charge.
