Free Lula!

 Free Lula!

The cry of “Free Lula” that swept the world since the arrest of the former president of Brazil on April 7, 2018 has become a reality.

The members of Brazil's Supreme Court voted on Thursday in a ruling that overturns the jurisprudence regarding the detention of defendants convicted in the second instance. This decision paved the way for Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to finally regain his freedom on Friday, November 8, after 580 days of unjust imprisonment.

Bernardo Mançano Fernandes, a member of the CLACSO Steering Committee, covered the release of the PT leader from the Curitiba prison for CLACSO Radio.

From the outset, the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) denounced Lula's arbitrary detention and promoted actions and organizations that championed his immediate release. Today, as this aspiration of every democrat has finally been realized, CLACSO salutes the Brazilian people who never gave up until this true leader of our continent was freed from prison.

New winds are blowing in Latin America at the end of 2019.
