The crisis in Peru has reached a critical point

Government repression has already claimed the lives of 48 people who were demonstrating in the streets.

In recent days, faced with continued protests, the government declared a state of emergency in several locations in an attempt to quell the popular demonstrations, leading to episodes of brutality and military repression. The decision came as mobilizations were called from southern Peru toward Lima at the beginning of this week.

CLACSO has been expressing various concerns and demands regarding the crisis. On December 19, they published: “We call for the country to be guided back to a path of democracy, peace, and respect for human rights, far removed from any authoritarian temptation. Likewise, we urge the Peruvian authorities to scrupulously respect the rights of former President Castillo and to treat him in accordance with due process.”

Messages of solidarity and protest were also disseminated from the Member centers in Cuba, Venezuela and on the part of CLACSO working groups.

CLACSO continues to reaffirm that it is unacceptable for the Peruvian government to resort to violence to address the crisis. Dialogue is necessary to find a peaceful solution. 

The Latin American Council of Social Sciences stands in solidarity with the Peruvian people and demands an end to the state of emergency, an end to the violence and repression, and the holding of fair and democratic elections that reflect the will of the Peruvian people.
