International Migrant Day

 International Migrant Day

Through its Resolution 55/93 of December 4, 2000, the UN officially proclaimed December 18 as International Migrants Day worldwide, promoting social inclusion and equal opportunities for migrants in any national territory of a State.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) defines a migrant as “any person who moves across an international border or within a country.” In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, migrants have been disproportionately affected by the lack of universal basic income, racial discrimination at borders, hate crimes, and human rights violations.

“Migration should be a choice, not a necessity. On International Migrants Day, we reaffirm our commitment to safe, orderly and regular migration; dignified for all,” the United Nations stated.

Karina Batthyány, Executive Secretary of CLACSO, dedicated her October 28th InfoCLACSO column to the topic of migrants. Among other points, she said:
“We know that even before the pandemic, we already had a very severe migration crisis in our region. Consider, for example, the population movements in the cases of Colombia and Venezuela, which have intensified with the arrival of the pandemic and the health crisis we are experiencing. Clearly, border closures, the reinforcement of security measures being implemented, and the effects of security policies within the health framework, or justified in many cases by the health crisis, have an impact on the migrant population that compels us to reflect on the issue of migration and, more generally, on human mobility. And not only to reflect, but also to take concrete measures to protect migrants in this context.”
