International Day of Indigenous Women 2025

The "International Indigenous Women's Day"It reminds me of Bartolina SisaBartolina Sisa, a Quechua leader who, along with her partner Túpac Katari, organized her people to fight against Spanish rule during the Túpac Katari anti-colonial rebellion in Upper Peru. In 1781, Bartolina was captured and subjected to horrific treatment, and Katari was brutally murdered. On September 5, 1782, Bartolina was executed by the conquistadors who saw in her and her people the limit of their lust for conquest.
In her honor, in 1983, during the Second Meeting of Organizations and Movements of America in Tiahuanaco, Bolivia, that day was defined as the International Day of Indigenous Women as a tribute to the women of the native peoples, great defenders of their communities and territories and guardians of ancestral culture.
El Latin American Council of Social Sciences This commemoration brings visibility to the women of all the indigenous peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean who fought and continue to fight for the recognition and defense of their rights.
In that context, CLACSO shares the book “Indigenous and Afro-descendant women facing the discourse of modern law”, Coordinated by Alma Guadalupe Melgarito RochaFrom the “Latin American Perspectives” collection, published in conjunction with Siglo XXI Mexico. A work that invites us to rethink feminisms from decolonial perspectives, highlighting the struggles and contributions of indigenous and Afro-descendant women in the contemporary debate on rights and emancipation.
