The other side of the World Cup: a feminist discussion
July 3 4:00 PM 6:00 PM CMT

🗓️ July 3, 2026 | Virtual mode
“The B-side of the World Cup” is a feminist discussion to reflect on what the world of professional football, in general, and the dynamics of the World Cup, in particular, mean for feminized and precarious subjects.
The meeting proposes four main areas of discussion: historical memories about women's participation in these settings; the inequalities and barriers that female athletes currently face; the popular, neighborhood, and feminist experiences that challenge football from the margins; and the consequences and impacts that these mega sporting events have on territories and their populations.
To develop these themes, four leading experts on the topic from different Latin American countries have been invited to recount the resistance women have faced and continue to face, examining, on the one hand, the resistance of the Mexican women's national team during the 1971 World Cup and, on the other, the current conditions of players in the Mexican professional league. The question will also be explored.
about what a World Cup means for the populations of the countries in which it takes place (trade bans, transit bans, dispossession, criminalization of protests and measures to legitimize highly repressive regimes); and the experiences of resistance and popular disputes that are currently being plotted.
