Winds of change and currents of solidarity

The conference “Winds of Change and Currents of Solidarity: Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe in the 21st Century”, on September 4 and 5 at the University of Bergen, Oslo, Norway, aims to focus on the general common possibilities and challenges for Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe in the foreseeable future.
The conference's academic committee has selected four interrelated topics of particular interest for debate and analysis, with water as a cross-cutting theme:
-Culture and arts.
-Democracy.
-Environment and technology.
-Health.
The conference is being attended by representatives from the nine Latin American and Caribbean embassies in Norway: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela. It brings together academics, professionals, policymakers, civil society, and other interested parties, seeking to advance dialogue, knowledge, and insight in order to find joint solutions to common challenges.

Speakers: Karina Batthyány, Executive Director of CLACSO; Emilce Cuda, Secretary of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, Vatican; Lise Øvreås, President of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters; Walter Flores, American University, Washington DC; Fernando Galván, Secretary General of the International Association of University Presidents; Bert Hoffmann, Senior Research Fellow at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA); Tomás Reyes Ortega, Chair of the Working Group – Latin America, Caribbean (COLAC) and Transatlantic Relations (COTRA), European External Action Service; Professor of History Terje Tvedt, University of Bergen; and Pablo Vommaro, Director of Research at CLACSO.


During the conference, on Monday, September 4th, Karina Batthyány He spoke about the “Role of the social sciences and humanities in the search for a more just and equitable society”

On Tuesday, September 5, the panel discussion "The Importance of Democracy: Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and the Global Order – What Role Can Latin America and the Caribbean Play in Today's Uncertain World?" took place, with the participation of: Karina Batthyány, Executive Director of CLACSO; Benedict BullProfessor at the Centre for Development and Environment at the University of Oslo; and Bert Hoffmann, Senior Research Fellow and Head of the Berlin Office at Giga, German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA). Moderated by: Pablo Vommaro, Director of Research at CLACSO.
