Towards a Pedagogy of Memory in Argentina
The Government of the province of Buenos Aires, the largest and most populated in Argentina, promotes and disseminates books that keep alive the memory against denialism about what was the civic-military dictatorship that ravaged the country from 1976 to 1983.
These are two collections promoted by the Undersecretariat of Education of the General Directorate of Culture and Education of the Province of Buenos Aires, which were presented on Monday, July 14th in the city of La Plata: «Library for a Pedagogy of Memory" and "Buenos Aires Scientific Classrooms – ABCiencias".
They participated in the launch Alberto Sileoni, Director General of Culture and Education of the Province of Buenos Aires; Pablo Urquiza, Undersecretary of Education; Robert Salvarezza, of the Scientific Research Commission of the Province of Buenos Aires; Celeste AdamoliCoordinator of Educational Policies on Memory and Human Rights; and Valeria EdelszteinResearcher and author. They represented CLACSO at the event Fernanda Pampín,Director of Publications, and Eric Domergue, author of one of the selected works.
Three works from the catalog of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences have been selected to be distributed by the education ministry:
-“Memory between politics and ethics” by Hector Schmucler and “The Plots of Time: Family, Gender, Memories, Rights and Social Movements,” by Elizabeth Jelin, in the collection "Library for a Pedagogy of Memory" intended for Higher Institutes of Teacher Training.
-“Science for the truth”, On the formation and trajectory of the Argentine Forensic Anthropology Team (EAAF), by Eric Domergue, a work of CLACSO together with the National University of Quilmes (UNQ), in the collection “Aulas Bonaerenses Científicas – ABCiencias”, books that will be distributed in secondary schools, Teacher Training Institutes, Training Centers, Educational Information and Research, Higher Education of Technical Training and Technical Professional Education of the Province.
The “Library for a Pedagogy of Memory” features 30 essential titles for discussing and reflecting on memory and the recent past, based on the profound conviction that it is crucial to develop new approaches so that teachers can promote a humanist education committed to the premise of “Never Again.” It includes the book "Keywords: for a pedagogy of memory", Launched by the Coordination of Educational Policies on Memory and Human Rights of the Undersecretariat of Education of the Province of Buenos Aires, this initiative invites reflection on the experience of the last dictatorship, taking language as a starting point and proposing 50 terms as triggers for classroom debate, including: What concepts should be used to discuss state terrorism? How should experiences of memory, truth, and justice be narrated? What are the “key words” to activate the transmission of this knowledge to new generations?
