Lula spent 500 days in prison

CLACSO was a founder and active member of the “Argentine Committee for the Freedom of Lula and Justice for Marielle” which was launched last April (www.lulalibre.org) and one of the hosts of the former president of Brazil, Dilma Rousseff, on her visit to Buenos Aires for the launch of the international campaign of denunciation and for a massive meeting with workers' unions, public universities, social movements, political parties and human rights organizations.

On this August 20th, the 500th day since the unjust imprisonment of former Brazilian president and founder of the PT, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the Latin American Council of Social Sciences joins the international day of action demanding his immediate release.

Faced with this ongoing situation, Celso Amorim, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Coordinator of the International Committee for Free Lula, Paulo Okamotto, President of the Lula Institute and Member of the National Coordination of the Free Lula Campaign, and Monica Valente, Executive Secretary of the São Paulo Forum and Member of the National Coordination and the International Committee for Free Lula, have launched the “International Day of Solidarity: 500 Days of Injustice – Freedom for Lula".

Brazilian leaders remind us that “Lula is innocent and was denied a fair trial: he was the victim of political persecution.” They emphasize that “recent information published by the website The Intercept They make it clear that Lula's investigations and trials have damaged the basic guarantees of any citizen, including his right to be tried by an impartial judge. Renowned jurists and researchers from around the world have just published an article expressing their bewilderment at this injustice and calling on Brazil's Supreme Court to overturn Lula's convictions and release him immediately.

They continue to say that “Several international leaders and institutions have already expressed their support for Lula, denouncing the breakdown of the democratic rule of law in Brazil represented by his arrest. As we approach the 500-day mark of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s illegal imprisonment on August 20, we urge you to join a new international wave of solidarity.”
