State of the art on care in rural contexts in Latin America and the Caribbean

In Latin America and the Caribbean, care is a fertile field that has generated numerous research projects, fostering unique approaches and conceptualizations. These studies clearly demonstrate that care takes on forms, content, and meanings that vary according to different socio-historical contexts, making it crucial to reflect on care within its specific contexts. This study advances a dimension less prominent in this discussion: the perspective on care in rural and agricultural work contexts.

This report on the “State of the art on care in rural contexts in Latin America and the CaribbeanThe purpose of this study is to review the different conceptual perspectives and empirical approaches to care in rural and agrarian studies in the region. Methodologically, a comprehensive survey of academic production from the social sciences was conducted, resulting in the collection of ninety scholarly texts (articles, conference papers, undergraduate and graduate theses, books, and reports) in Spanish and Portuguese, all focusing on care in rural Latin America and the Caribbean. The interpretive analysis of this collection of texts aimed to identify how care is conceptualized, systematize the main findings of these studies, and establish lines of inquiry for developing a Latin American research agenda on care in rural and agricultural contexts.

It is important to bear in mind that rural areas in Latin America and the Caribbean are characterized by a diversity of social groups, economic activities, cultures, environments, and geographical settings. Therefore, this study invites us to consider ruralities in the plural, from the multiple realities that shape different contexts for care.

The team consists of Paola Mascheroni, PhD in Sociology from the University of Granada, Spain; Alfonsina Alberti, PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina (coordinator); and Sofia AnguloMaster in Sociology from the University of the Republic, Uruguay; members of the CLACSO Working Group 'Agricultural work, ruralities and inequalities'.

The document is organized into four chapters. The first presents the study and develops some elements for understanding care in rural contexts. The second focuses on the conceptualizations of care developed in rural and agricultural studies. The third centers on the empirical findings of the research, organized into seven analytical axes. The final chapter includes a proposal for lines of research aimed at shaping a Latin American agenda on care in rural contexts.
