Hugo Zemelman's thinking continues to evolve

On this day, October 7, 1931, the Chilean sociologist and epistemologist was born Hugo Zemelman, who passed away on October 3, 2013. On this day, we remember him and honor his legacy by sharing the book “Epistemology and Politics. Essays. Hugo Zemelman Prize (2023)”. a collective work that brings together essays that engage with the critical thinking and methodological legacy of a Latin American thinker with epistemic sensitivity.
Zemelman was one of those intellectuals who intertwined philosophical reflection with activism for engaged knowledge. His work—his conception of critical epistemology, his insistence on thinking of social science as situated practice, his rejection of dogmatic interpretations—remains a beacon for those of us who believe that thinking is also acting. This tribute volume reflects that legacy: the works it contains not only question dominant paradigms but also seek to open new possibilities for the production of emancipatory knowledge in Latin America and the Caribbean.
May this publication be more than a posthumous tribute: may it be a living testament to the fact that Hugo Zemelman's thought continues to evolve, fueling debates, sparking questions, and encouraging new generations to consider what is possible. May his ideas continue to be fertile ground on the collective paths of epistemic transformation.
