International Day of People of African Descent

This year, 2021, marks the first time that the International Day of People of African Descent will be celebrated on August 31st, in homage to the contributions of the African diaspora around the world and to raise awareness about the need to eliminate all forms of discrimination.

The initiative was presented by Costa Rica and co-sponsored by 52 member states for approval at the United Nations General Assembly. The declaration comes in the context of the centenary of the Declaration on the Rights of Black People, which recognized August 31 as a day to celebrate the contributions of people of African descent and their diasporas around the world.

This proclamation focuses on protecting the rights of people of African descent, as well as recognizing their contributions and preserving their cultural heritage.

CLACSO has two Working Groups: “Afro-descendants and counter-hegemonic proposals" and "Civilizational crisis, reconfigurations of racism, Afro-Latin American social movements«.

"Afro-descendants and counter-hegemonic proposalsFounded in 2016, the Working Group was a pioneer in the production, training, and dissemination of knowledge in the field of Afro-descendant studies, coordinated by Rosa Campoalegre Septien of the Center for Psychological and Sociological Research in Cuba. The Working Group is composed of researchers, Afro-descendant activists, and public policy officials, with a predominance of voices from Black intellectuals and leaders from the Americas and Africa, including Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, the United States, Haiti, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic.
