 International Day of Afro-descendants

Since 2021, August 31st has been celebrated as International Day of People of African Descent, in homage to the contributions of the African diaspora around the world and to raise awareness about the need to eliminate all forms of discrimination.

This proclamation focuses on protecting the rights of people of African descent, as well as recognizing their contributions and preserving their cultural heritage.

CLACSO has been addressing and disseminating this topic since its founding. Currently, it has several productions and two Working Groups about Afro-descendants:

Afro-descendants and counter-hegemonic proposals

Founded in 2016, the Working Group (GT) was a pioneer in the production, training, and dissemination of knowledge in the field of Afro-descendant studies. It is coordinated by Rosa Campoalegre Septien of the Center for Psychological and Sociological Research in Cuba. The GT comprises researchers, Afro-descendant activists, and public policy officials, with a strong focus on the voices of Black intellectuals and leaders from the Americas and Africa, including Argentina, Brazil, Cameroon, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, the United States, Haiti, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic.

The Working Group is based on four axes: Afroepistemology, Afro-Latin social movements, Black feminisms and intersectionality, Racial states and ethnic-racial policies, coordinated by Diógenes Rafael Díaz Campos of the Doctorate of Social Sciences mention Cultural Studies of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Carabobo, Venezuela, and Agustín Lao-Montes of the Center of Interdisciplinary Legal and Social Studies of the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, ICESI University, Colombia.


-Advanced Diploma in Afro-descendant Peoples and Historical Reparation
