Latin American Essay Contest on Open Access

AmeliCA, UNESCO, Redalyc and CLACSO, on the occasion of the Open Access Week 2020 whose motto is "Opening with Purpose: "To undertake actions to build structural equity and inclusion," they call for participation in this contest with essays on the new changes in the processes of publication and democratization of knowledge.

Latin American Essay Contest on Open Access 2020  

Addressed to: young researchers, undergraduate or postgraduate students.

Contest rules:

1. Entries must be submitted individually in essay format and must address the contest theme: “Opening with Purpose: Taking Action to Build Structural Equity and Inclusion.” There are 6 thematic categories:
2. Students, academics, and Open Access.
3. Open Access to Information in Universities.
4. Public or private science: reflections towards equity and participation.
5. The impact of Open Access during the COVID-19 health emergency.
6. Open Access Policies in Universities.
7. Access to information and inclusion of vulnerable groups.
8. Contestants may participate with only one work, which must be unpublished, original and not have been published either in whole or in part.
9. An essay is defined as a short piece of writing that analyzes and reflects on the topic, emphasizing critical thinking. It is based on the author's own reflections, supported by logic and arguments with solid theoretical foundations, allowing them to substantiate their position and opinions. The language should be clear and accessible to everyone, written in prose with a free style.
10. Written in Spanish or Portuguese.

The essay structure must contain the following elements:

1. Qualification.
2. Index (optional).
3. Summary (maximum 300 words).
4. Introduction
5. Content development.
6. Conclusions.
7. References.
8. Annexes (if necessary).
9. The maximum length is 15 letter-size pages (maximum 6000 words), using Times New Roman font, 12-point size, 1.5 line spacing, justified text, and numbered pages. The top and left margins should be 3 cm, and the bottom and right margins 2,5 cm. The document format can be Word© or OpenOffice Writer.
10. Submissions should be sent to the following email address: [email protected] taking into account the deadline for receiving work.
11. Three prizes will be awarded per category:

• First place: $500 USD, official recognition and publication of the essay.
• Second place: $300 USD, official recognition and publication of the essay.
• Third place: 200 USD, official recognition and publication of the essay.

Publication of the essay: The essays that are chosen by the Evaluation Committee will be published in a book edited by the convening institutions, therefore the authors accept the publication of their essay.

Evaluation Committee: Members of the Working Group CLACSO Open Knowledge as a Common Good.

Dates:

Submission period: until December 28, 2020.
Awards ceremony and publication of works: 2021.

Results

The Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) shares the results of the 2020 Latin American Essay Contest on Open Access, published by AmeliCA. The contest was organized jointly with UNESCO and Redalyc. Launched in September 2020, the contest accepted essays until December 28 of that year.
