CLACSO at ALAS 2024
From November 3rd to 8th | In-person format | Dominican Republic
Alma Mater, National District, Autonomous University of Santo Domingo
El XXXIV ALAS Congress 2024 Taking place from November 3 to 8 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, the ALAS Congress is presented as a relevant and opportune forum for addressing the challenges and opportunities facing Latin America and the Caribbean in an increasingly complex global context. Furthermore, the ALAS Congresses provide a space to develop the social dialogues that we promote at CLACSO within the framework of the Platforms for Social Dialogue project, which we launched in 2022.
Within this framework, CLACSO will carry out a series of activities that seek to enrich the intellectual and academic debate and strengthen the links and exchanges between researchers, institutions and networks throughout the region:
- II Graduate School of the Network of Contemporary Latin American and Caribbean Social Studies
- CLACSO-UN Women's Forum "Multiple Dimensions of Care in Latin America and the Caribbean"
- Conference on Gender, Care and Inequalities in Latin America: Towards a Social Justice Agenda
- Workshop on Writing Articles for International Sociology Journals, co-organized with the ISA
- Panels and activities organized by CLACSO Programs and Areas and by Working Groups
- Meeting with CLACSO Working Groups and Member Centers present at ALAS
- Book presentations
- Visits and field trips
Opening of the 2nd International Postgraduate School of the Network of Contemporary Latin American and Caribbean Social Studies (REDPEL)

In this edition, we reaffirm our commitment to building a space for dialogue and collective reflection, where the most urgent problems of our societies are addressed and collective work is undertaken to move towards fairer and more equitable futures.

The Network of Contemporary Latin American and Caribbean Social Studies (REDPEL) emerged in 2019, within the framework of an agreement between CLACSO, ALAS and the Postgraduate Program in Latin American Studies of UNAM, on the occasion of a preparatory event for the ALAS Congress.
The REDPEL First Graduate School was created in response to the challenge of generating a space for theoretical and methodological training in Latin American and Caribbean studies, one of the fields of knowledge that has produced some of the most important and significant theses for interpreting the place of Latin America and the Caribbean in history and in the world.

ALAS-CLACSO Panel: Towards a situated and responsible academic evaluation in Latin America and the Caribbean
Evaluation is a central aspect of academic institutions and practices. It has frequently been criticized, especially in its technocratic and neoliberal utilitarian variants, for its use of external models and criteria that are ill-suited to local contexts, and for its logic of producing abstract rankings, which are then used as a supposed seal of quality and a basis for the commodification of higher education. However, responsible and situated evaluation, independent of this neoliberal logic, is an important tool for critically understanding diverse aspects of university life, identifying the systemic impacts of educational policies on institutions and on training and research programs, as well as on the trajectories of students, faculty, and researchers, and contributing to the construction of universities that not only provide high-quality academic training but are also democratic and inclusive, attentive to care, the promotion of gender equity, the recognition of diversity and environmental issues, among other matters. In this context, in this panel we propose to explain the principles that guide CLACSO's initiatives for the evaluation of research (FOLEC) and of the university (SILEU) from a situated, critical, autonomous and responsible Latin American perspective.
