This course provides conceptual and strategic tools for contemporary political analysis. Through lectures, case studies, and current debates, it addresses key questions about the exercise of power, political regimes, the relevance of democracy, the impact of lawfare in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Spain, and international relations from a perspective situated in the Global South.
Class 1 | What is politics?
Machiavelli and the science of power. The State, the Nation, and identity. Coloniality of power and political economy. Violence as the midwife of history.
Analysis: “The Battle of Algiers” by Gillo Pontecorvo.
Class 2 | What are political regimes?
Democratic and non-democratic systems. Coloniality and democracy. Is a settler democracy possible?
Analysis: The Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
Class 3 | Guest: Manuel Castells
The transformation of politics in the digital society.
Class 4 | What is democracy?
Democracy as a balance of power. Political actors: parties, civil society, media companies, state powers.
Analysis: Allende's thousand days as a paradigm of transition from democracy to dictatorship.
Class 5 | Guest: Arantxa Tirado
Lawfare as a power strategy. New forms of judicial warfare in Latin America and Spain.
Class 6 | International Relations and Comparative Politics
From global governance to geopolitics. Interstate systems, hegemony, and dependence. Is it possible to understand the world without understanding its countries?
Analysis: NATO as an organization at the service of a country.
The course will be delivered online, combining synchronous and asynchronous components. Over the course of one month, a total of six classes will be offered: four live sessions with the instructor (synchronous) and two recorded sessions available for asynchronous viewing.
Live classes will be held on the following days Friday at 10am (MEX/Central America) / 11am (COL/ECU/PERU) / 12pm (CHI) / 13pm (ARG/URU/BRA) / 18pm (ESP) through the Zoom platform, which will allow direct interaction between participants. In addition, students will have access to exclusive materials, available in the virtual classroom, that will complement the content covered in each session.
The final assessment will consist of an individual online questionnaire, which will be a necessary condition for passing the course.
