This course provides conceptual and strategic tools for contemporary political analysis. Through lectures, case studies, and current debates, it addresses key questions about the exercise of power, political regimes, the relevance of democracy, the impact of lawfare in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Spain, and international relations from a perspective situated in the Global South.
Class 1 | What is politics?
Machiavelli and the science of power. The State, the Nation, and identity. Coloniality of power and political economy. Violence as the midwife of history.
Analysis: “The Battle of Algiers” by Gillo Pontecorvo.
Class 2 | What are regimes and political actors?
Democratic and non-democratic systems. Political parties, civil society, social movements, businesses, and the media.
Case analysis: The Mexican political system and its actors

State, polycrisis, interregnum, and liminal time
Class 4 | What is democracy?
Democracy as a balance of power. The crisis of liberal democracy and the rise of the new far right. The fascistization of the right.
Case analysis: The crisis of the Spanish political system

From global governance to geopolitics. Interstate systems, hegemony, and dependence. Is it possible to understand the world without understanding its countries?
Analysis: NATO as an instrument at the service of the US

The course will be delivered online, combining synchronous and asynchronous components. Over the course of one month, a total of six classes will be offered: four live sessions with the instructor (synchronous) and two recorded sessions available for asynchronous viewing.
Live classes will be held via Zoom, allowing for direct interaction among participants. In addition, students will have access to exclusive materials, available in the virtual classroom, to complement the content covered in each session.
The final assessment will consist of an individual online questionnaire, which will be a necessary condition for passing the course.
