This symposium aims to be a space for critical reflection on the analytical power of silences, omissions, and the ethical and theoretical-methodological challenges they pose. Some of the questions that will guide the collective reflection are: What are the social conditions that produce
What are the forgettings and silences, and what makes the unspeakable speakable? How do we distinguish the eruption of forgetting/silence? What ethical considerations must we keep in mind when working with the forgettings and silences of Others? What contexts must we consider when analyzing them? Beyond oral history as a method and testimony as a means of reconstructing memories/forgettings (Pollack 1989), what other tools do we have in social research for accessing and analyzing forgettings and silences? What are the limits of the speakable/unspeakable?
