Population aging is a reality in all countries, although its pace varies. At the same time, the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in all kinds of activities (along with the phenomena known as “Industry 4.0” and the “Internet of Things”) may reduce the demand for labor and generate a greater number of people excluded from the labor market. This is compounded by precarious workers or those in the gig economy, who emerged from neoliberalism in recent decades, and by workers traditionally integrated into the informal market. The capital/wage labor dynamic that is being configured would result in a smaller formal market with an increase in informality, which adds to the structural component another one derived from the supremacy of financial capital and the neoliberal policies that accompany it.
These processes—population aging and the relative contraction of the formal labor market—are closely related, in particular, to public pension systems, affecting both their expenditure structure and their sources of financing.
To face the challenges ahead, which are already beginning to be felt, the CLACSO Working Group on Social Security and Pension Systems It proposes that the discussion within it focus on these issues by holding three seminars, one per month.
