Mariana Valverde is a professor at the Centre for Criminology and Socio-Legal Studies at the University of Toronto, Canada. She is one of the leading researchers in the field of socio-legal studies, working in dialogue with feminist theory and the work of Foucault. She has a prolific output of books and articles, including: *Sex, Power and Pleasure* (1985), *Diseases of the Will: Alcohol and the Dilemmas of Freedom* (2000), *Everyday Law on the Street: City Governance in an Age of Diversity* (2012), *Chronotopes of Law: Jurisdiction, Scale and Governance* (2015), and *The Routledge Handbook of Law and Society* (2021). Her book *Michel Foucault*, published in 2017, in which she explores Foucault's theoretical contributions to the fields of criminology, justice, and criminal law, has become one of the most influential works on these topics.
