The international seminar “Urban Popular Economies in the Global War Regime” will take place in the Conference Hall of the Palazzo Liviano in Padua, Italy, on May 21 and 22, 2026. The seminar is funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU and the University of Padua, within the framework of the STARS Grants@Unipd 2023 ECOPOP program – Popular Economies in Latin America: urban territories and self-organization in Colombia.
The event will be co-organized and will feature the participation of several research groups that contribute transnationally and transdisciplinarily to debates on popular economies in Latin America, Africa, and Asia: the CLACSO Working Group "Popular Economies: Theoretical and Practical Mapping," the Urban Popular Economies Collective, the Socioeconomics, Institutions, and Development Group of the National University of Colombia, in collaboration with the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and the journal Tracce Urbane – Italian Journal of Urban Studies. Several of the contributions presented at this seminar will be published in the next issue of this journal, dedicated to popular economies in the context of the global war regime, edited by members of the CLACSO Working Group "Popular Economies: Theoretical and Practical Mapping."
This event will follow up on the international exchange of research, critical debates, and analytical and political perspectives that began more than ten years ago and contributes to linking the CLACSO Working Group with international research experiences, as happened with the 2024 meeting "Urban Transitions and Popular Economies: How to Inhabit Differently?", in La Paz and El Alto, Bolivia, and will also link with various research experiences from Italy and Europe.
