Flora Tristán Chair: Women and Cinema

October 27 – 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm CMT

The Rómulo Gallegos Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies (CELARG) invites you to a new installment of the Flora Tristán Open Chair with the discussion "Women and Cinema." Discussing the role of women in film involves delving into a journey marked by persistence, liminal perspectives, and aesthetic ruptures within a historically androcentric film industry. In this space, we propose to reflect on how audiovisual creations by women have challenged traditional narratives and opened new forms of visual storytelling and critical sensibility. The discussion will feature valuable insights from distinguished speakers: Rosa Raydán, president of the National Film Archive; Alborada Garrido, renowned writer and filmmaker; and Fernando Aranguren, writer and cultural promoter, moderated by Alba Carosio. Each will contribute fundamental perspectives from filmmaking, cultural management, and literary analysis to debate the transformation of the audiovisual landscape and the transformative role of the female gaze. Tuesday, October 27, 2026, Time: 4:00 p.m., Celarg-Altamira! We'll be waiting for you!
