XVIII Latin American and Caribbean Meeting on University Extension
The Latin American Union of University Extension (ULEU) and the Specialized University of the Americas (UDELAS) promoted the realization of XVIII Latin American and Caribbean Congress of University Extension From August 18 to 22 in Panama City. It was a space for the exchange of experiences and knowledge from critical perspectives, whose central theme was “University Extension as a Function Articulating the University with Society: Feminisms, Social Movements, Communication and Integration of University Functions".
Gloria Amézquita, Academic Director of CLACSO, participated in the inaugural conference with the presentation: “Latin America and the Caribbean in the global context: university challenges and the transformative role of extension”, moderated by Luis Barrera of the University of Avellaneda in Argentina, in the Parlatino Auditorium.
In her remarks, Gloria Amézquita emphasized the importance of university outreach as a two-way exchange between the university and society, where academic knowledge is enriched by popular knowledge, and vice versa. She also stressed the transformative role of outreach in addressing the current challenges facing Latin America and the Caribbean within the global context.
The congress was aimed at higher education institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean, including their administrators, faculty, researchers, extension workers, students, graduates, and the entire university community. It also included representatives from government institutions and agencies, civil society organizations, and members of social and community organizations.
The 18th University Extension Meeting featured a variety of activities, including keynote lectures, panels, roundtables, workshops, poster presentations and papers, book and journal distribution, and various cultural events. Its main objectives were:
-To problematize the current conditions of University Extension, its perspectives and conceptual positions as a multidimensional work (ethical, historical, cultural, political, scientific, pedagogical, communicational, philosophical, environmental and social).
-To promote the articulation and internationalization of university extension from a global and comprehensive proposal that addresses common problems.
-To contribute to the theoretical reflection of practices from a Critical Extension perspective, building knowledge arising from experiences.
-Study the integralities that are constituted in the university activity organized through projects: territorial, intra and interinstitutional, curricular, interdisciplinary, of academic functions (Research/teaching/extension/technological linkage/management).
-To critically link academic knowledge with popular knowledge, promoting alternative knowledge to the methods established in the academic field.
-Provide tools to produce situated knowledge in dialogue with, in and from the territories.
