International Workshop on Socio-Spatial and Socio-Territorial Movements in Latin America

Last Friday, November 24th, the International Workshop entitled “Socio-spatial and Socio-territorial Movements in Critical and Comparative Perspective” took place in the Central Library of the Tandil University Campus (UNICEN) . The Center for Social Studies of Latin America (FCH-UNICEN/CIC), together with the CLACSO Working Group on Socio-territorial Movements in Critical and Comparative Perspective , are delighted to have organized this academic event.

In particular, we highlight the valuable opportunity for training and academic debate that the meeting provided, strengthening the development of research focused on the study of movements within the current Latin American context. In this way, a space was created to critically examine diverse theoretical, methodological, and empirical approaches dedicated to the study of urban and rural social struggles for respect for nature, the right to land, housing, the city, and the lives of communities.

The International Workshop brought together researchers, graduate students, fellows, students, and social activists from Mexico, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina, who presented theoretical and methodological contributions and the results of their respective teams' collective work. Among the institutional affiliations of those presenting their research were: El Colegio de la Frontera Norte (El Colef) in Mexico; the Institute of Social Research (IIS) at the University of Costa Rica; the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico; the School of Geography for Life – Multipurpose Cadastre at the Agustín Codazzi Geographic Institute; the Institute of Geographies for Peace (ICCG) in Colombia; the University of Caldas in Colombia; the University of Tolima in Colombia; the National University of Colombia; the São Paulo State University (UNESP) in Brazil; the Institute of Public Policy at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) in Brazil; and the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) in Brazil. The University of Brasilia (UnB) of Brazil; the Heñói Center for Studies; the National University of Asunción (UNA) of Paraguay; the Latin American Agroecological Institute IALA Guaraní of Paraguay; the National Coordination of Rural and Indigenous Women (CONAMURI) of Paraguay; the National Indigenous Articulation for Dignified Life (ANIVID) of Paraguay; the Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Health of the National University of Santiago del Estero (UNSE); the Faculty of Humanities and Education Sciences of the National University of La Plata (UNLP); the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters of the University of Buenos Aires (UBA); and, the Faculty of Human Sciences of the National University of the Center of the Province of Buenos Aires (UNICEN).

From CESAL and UNICEN, we celebrate that on this occasion we had the opportunity to host this event, which in a bimodal way allowed us to unite different latitudes of Latin America and the Caribbean in a day of reflection, debate, exchange, learning and collective work that enriched both the public and the teams of the participating countries and institutions.
