Rebel Voices from Border Feminisms
The meeting took place on November 20, 2019 Feminisms of/on the border organized by the CLACSO Working Group “Bodies, territories and feminisms”, the Research Group “On the Edge – Construction of Undisciplined Thought” of the Center for Geographical Research (IdIHCS – UNLP), the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and the Virginia Bolten Free Chair.
The meeting, held in the Sergio Karakachoff Building at the National University of La Plata, took the form of a discussion and brought together diverse feminist resistance movements from border regions in a broad sense. The objective was to share experiences from different geographical areas and discuss the achievements, progress, tensions, and challenges of anti-capitalist, anti-racist, and trans-feminist struggles, as well as the possible and desirable ways of working together for social transformation and the continuation of life within these frameworks.
The proposal was permeated by the voices of those who inhabit these experiences in order to think in a situated way about the forms of collective, dissident, feminist and popular resistance to the logics of capitalist advance on the multiple territories and borders of Latin America and the world.
The following were present: Patricia Laterra, member of the Feminist Economics Space, Gladys Flores, Afro-Guaraní feminist popular educator, Maura Febles Domínguez, from the GALFISA research group in Havana, Camilo Losada, transmasculine activist, member of “Men in Disorder” in Bogotá, Valeria Silva, Mapuche intersex activist, Luz Asalde Hernández, worker in the social economy and member of the Darío Santillán Popular Front – National Current, Ana y Andrea Ecuadorian feminists belonging to the Longas Fieras Subversivas, Melike Yasar, representative of the Kurdish women's movement for Latin America, and Sofia y Agustina, members of the Minervas Feminist Collective of Montevideo.
On this occasion, as part of the commemorations of March 8th, International Working Women's Day and the date of the International Women's, Lesbian, Transvestite, Trans and Non-Binary Strike, we share some phrases that resonated in the activity and that encourage us to continue resisting and building an anti-capitalist, anti-racist and profoundly feminist society.
The idea of "Feminisms of (on) the border" invites us to think in terms of alliances, strategies, resistance, and shared struggles against the multiple forms of domination and oppression that the peoples of Our America and the world have suffered and continue to suffer. Here are some of the voices and bodies that inhabit these experiences of transfeminist construction and that contribute to the possibility of developing situated strategies in the face of the advance of capital.
