Over the past two years, the country and the world have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and it is impossible to avoid addressing this when organizing a Sociology congress. This event, which unfolded in a short period of time, accelerated, deepened, and changed many aspects of societies, and it touches upon the vast majority of sociological fields of study.
Changes have occurred or are occurring in diverse ways and in different spheres, from the organization of work, the distribution of unpaid and care work, education, politics, the role and scope of science, the use of public spaces, territorial development, communications, technologies, physical and mental health, leisure, sports, consumption patterns, and economic development. But effects related to violence and crime, deepening poverty, and inequality have also become visible. All these aspects are, in turn, permeated by gender, generational, class, and territorial inequalities.
The organizers of the Fifth Uruguayan Congress of Sociology aim to build upon previous national congresses, broadly convening sociologists from diverse professional and academic backgrounds, as well as undergraduate and graduate students, to foster a comprehensive exchange of research findings, knowledge, reflection, and critical analysis. This congress invites participants to analyze and reflect beyond the pandemic, not only in temporal terms but also to understand the impact these social crossroads have had, are having, and may have on sociology.
