Housing, education and memory in the Chile of José Antonio Kast
Just months after José Antonio Kast assumed the presidency, Chile is grappling with the tension between deepening the neoliberal model and the persistence of long-neglected historical demands. In this special report from CLACSO.TV, we bring together three essential perspectives from critical thought and the CLACSO Network to interpret the ferment in a country amidst a complex multi-crisis:
– Marco Álvarez , member of the CLACSO Steering Committee for Chile
– Nelson Carroza Athens , sociologist, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Playa Ancha, Chile
– Rolando Durán Cavieres , member of the “Cartographies of Memory” collective in Chile
From budgetary suffocation and judicial seizures of professionals indebted for higher education, through the structural crisis of habitat and housing – turned into a public safety problem by reactionary forces – to the urgent dispute over the cartographies of memory in the face of denialism, the three interviews allow us to map the tensions, setbacks and resistances in Chile today.
