CLACSO Working Group on Borders: Mobilities, Identities and Trade

"Arrival without a Step" is about setting aside academic rationality. It's about opening up memory, body, and emotions to speak of the borders that have crossed us at different times and in various ways: in fieldwork, in the classroom, in writing, in reading, or in the simple flow of daily life. "Arrival without a Step" is the exercise that allowed us to construct the narrative of this book we present to you today. An intimate work, without a doubt. "Arrival without a Step" is what we recover from deconstruction: the impossibility of writing aporetically, as Jacques Derrida repeatedly shows us, just as borders themselves are. An ethical writing that accounts for the other in shared responsibility with the writer. In retrospect, our purpose was not only achieved but surpassed in its initial expectations. We managed to create a work based on the border experiences of those of us who inhabit, study, or research borders, and also to craft a work that, through autobiographical narratives, already puts the ontology of borders into debate.
