Uruguay: Serious threat to the future of the University of the Republic
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Currently, the Uruguayan Parliament is discussing the draft "Accountability and Budget Execution Balance" corresponding to the 2021 fiscal year.
Assuming a favorable economic climate for the country, a series of future adjustments are outlined. Among them, the University of the Republic (UdelaR) is the only public institution that presents a decrease in its permanent budget.
This fact constitutes a reaction threat al future de la UdelaR in the country, an institution that has maintained record student enrollment (especially during the pandemic) and concentrates more than 90% of scientific research at the national level.
The Latin American Council of Social Sciences expresses its deep concern about this fact which, if confirmed, leads to a worsening of the conditions of study and work in public higher education in Uruguay.
