University of Christian Humanism Academy – Chile
Álvaro Ramis – Rector
The University of Christian Humanism was founded on November 15, 1975, as a center of studies created by Cardinal Raúl Silva Henríquez to promote pluralism and academic freedom in response to the serious human rights violations affecting the country. Thus, the Academy of Christian Humanism was born, allowing a broad group of intellectuals to develop a space for the creation and dissemination of knowledge about our political, economic, social, and cultural reality. The founding decree affirmed “the need for an institution of high intellectual value, dedicated to the investigation of the major problems of the social sciences and humanities.”
In 1988, the Academy decided to transform itself into a university institution consistent with humanist values stemming from diverse strands of critical thought. Thus, the Corporación Universidad Academia de Humanismo Cristiano (University Corporation of Christian Humanism) was born as a unique proposal in our country, due to its critical nature, its social ownership structure, its democratic form of governance, and the innovative educational model it seeks to implement.
The UAHC is currently the only university in the country that democratically elects all its single-person authorities, with tri-partite participation. The University's Educational Model stands out for its critical and transformative vision of education and society. Inspired by the promotion and defense of Human Rights and democracy, its basic principles include valuing sustainable and inclusive development, with special emphasis on equity and the elimination of all forms of discrimination; building an educational space with an open and pluralistic perspective, which makes critical thinking a hallmark of its teaching; and participation as a core value of academic and institutional management.
The University Corporation is composed of the following partner centers:
- Private Corporation for Social Development Agricultural Research Group GIA.
- University and Development Foundation (FUD).
- Labor Economics Program Corporation PET.
- Corporation for Mining Studies and Research CORPODIUM
- Center for Studies and Research on Contemporary Reality Corporation CEIRC.
These institutions constitute the highest governing body of the University. The Assembly appoints a Board of Directors responsible for defining the University's general policies.
