Transforming the life contexts of children and young people

From July 17 to 21, 2023, the event was held in Manizales, Colombia. V Latin American and Caribbean Biennial on Early Childhood, Childhood and YouthThe Biennial aimed to positively impact the improvement and understanding of the realities experienced by children and young people in Latin America and the Caribbean through comparative context analysis, the development of research processes, the participatory construction of initiatives and alternatives, direct dialogue with public policymakers and government actors in different parts of the region, and the ways in which states and social organizations connect, among other practices. The Biennial is the largest forum in Latin America for collaboration between academia, public policy, and social organizations focused on early childhood, childhood, and youth.

The Inaugural Conference on Tuesday the 18th was led by Karina Batthyány, Executive Director of CLACSO, who spoke about “The challenges of the care society in Latin America and the Caribbean”, emphasizing that “the issue of care allows us to articulate debates that were previously scattered, such as the agendas linked to children and youth with care and the gender agenda”

CLACSO International Graduate Schools
-International Graduate School: Debates and Perspectives on Violence in Latin America and the Caribbean. This intensive, in-person graduate-level training program, focused on comparative and regional perspectives, aims to equip students with the skills to understand current forms of violence in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is hoped that this training initiative will contribute to fostering collaboration between academia, public policy experts, and social movements and activist groups working to eradicate the various forms of violence in our region.

-XI International School of the Ibero-American Network of Postgraduate Studies in Childhood and Youth – RedINJU: Generational inequalities, collective social mobilization and life narratives
This school is organized by the Postgraduate Network of the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO), the Ibero-American Network of Postgraduate Studies in Childhood and Youth – RedINJU, within the framework of its 12 years, the Center for Advanced Studies in Childhood and Youth (CEANJ), the University of Manizales and the CLACSO Working Group on Childhood and Youth, and will have the participation of advanced master's and doctoral students, public policy officials and representatives of social organizations from Latin America and the Caribbean.
For Yamileth Andrade, Vice-Rector of the University of Manizales, the host institution of this 11th international school: "The challenge that brings us together today is to be able to transform life contexts through the construction of new knowledge that unfolds into public policies and social transformation initiatives, to raise awareness about the different social problems faced by children and young people due to inequality, poverty, war, and the lack of opportunities for our children and youth."


On Tuesday the 18th, a tour was organized through different points of Manizales to learn about and share popular neighborhood experiences, such as the memory murals of the Emerging Corporation and the Huellas de Vida Community Foundation and the Chispas de Esperanza Youth Training Center.
