“We must commit to gender parity in production”

Francisco Cos-Montiel , Coordinator of the Gender Justice Research Program at the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development – ​​UNRISD, participated in the UN Women meeting in Buenos Aires from November 7 to 11, 2022. During a break in the deliberations, he had a dialogue with Karina Batthyány , Executive Director of CLACSO.

Among other points, she stated: “We know it’s very important for women to work, for women to have higher incomes. But if women—and men too—don’t move away from this traditional mandate of femininity and masculinity, we won’t achieve gender equality. Hopefully, one day sexual difference won’t matter either in terms of how much we earn or how much care we provide, and we will be human beings with some differences, but fundamentally fully committed to being equal in the sphere of production and reproduction of human life.”

On another note, he analyzed that “we have been researching inequality for many years with some policies to try to reduce it, not very efficiently because we continue to be an incredibly unequal region in an incredibly unequal world. We are facing inequality that increased terribly after the pandemic, with 120 million people falling into poverty as a result of that pandemic.”
