Duration: 2 weeks

Fifty years ago, in 1976, Yves Lacoste suggested that "geography serves, fundamentally, to wage war." If such a subtle yet obvious detail could be perceived in a relatively encapsulated historical period like the Cold War, how can we consider the functionality of geopolitics in a highly dynamic historical period of transition toward a multipolar world?

To be more specific, and considering the perspective of Latin America and an international order in crisis, what real function does geopolitics, or rather, a certain kind of geopolitics, have? Furthermore, what kind of geopolitical knowledge should the Global South embrace in light of the recent publication of the 'National Security Strategy' promoted by US President Donald Trump?

This intensive course will answer questions like these. It will be divided into two main parts. The first will define geopolitics; it will trace the genealogy of the field of knowledge that has been developing over the last 126 years—both within and outside of Latin America and the Caribbean—and will address the approaches and tools necessary for conducting critical analyses.

In the second part, we will delve into the specifics. We will begin with a critical analysis of the current international situation. Next, we will focus on the structural element that characterizes this historical period: the shift of the global geopolitical axis from the Atlantic to the Asia-Pacific. We will conclude by reflecting on the position of Latin America and the Caribbean within this framework, primarily from the perspective of strategic natural resources.

  • What is Geopolitics?
  • What kind of geopolitics is being practiced today?
  • How to do Geopolitics?
  • Geopolitical analysis of the contemporary world situation
  • The new dynamics of the world system: from Atlanticism to Asia Pacific
  • Latin America and the Caribbean and the geopolitics of natural resources

The course will be delivered online, combining synchronous and asynchronous sessions. Over the two weeks, a total of ten classes will be taught, eight of which will be live and two will be available as recordings for asynchronous viewing.

Live classes will be held on the following days Thursday and Friday from 16 to 19 p.m. (MEX/Central America) / 17 to 20 p.m. (COL/ECU/PERU) / 19 to 22 p.m. (ARG/URU/BRA/CHI) through the Zoom platform, which will allow direct interaction between participants. In addition, students will have access to exclusive materials, available in the virtual classroom, that will complement the content covered in each session.
