Solidarity with Gerardo Caetano

 Solidarity with Gerardo Caetano

In the last few hours, Uruguayan historian and political scientist Gerardo Caetano, a member of CLACSO and former member of our Steering Committee, has been attacked and attempts have been made to delegitimize him for his statements about the recent past in an academic activity organized by the Army and the University of the Republic (UDELAR).

Caetano, after giving a talk to Army officers about the dictatorship, asking them "not to carry the burden of the state terrorists," received attacks on social media and in the press from deplorable figures of the Uruguayan dictatorship.

The intimidating mechanisms are reminiscent of those used by the same actors in the different Latin American dictatorships and do not contribute to democratic debate and strengthening.

The CLACSO Steering Committee reaffirms its commitment to democracies, justice and human rights, and emphatically rejects the attacks against Gerardo Caetano, one of the teachers and researchers who has contributed the most to the knowledge of the recent past.

The Latin American Council of Social Sciences supports the denunciations and actions of human rights organizations in our continent, a region marked by this methodology of terror and by the struggles of families and civil society for Never Again and for Memory, Truth and Justice.
