Solidarity with Dr. Eduardo Velásquez, former president of ALAS, and with the teachers and students who are victims of repression in Guatemala
El CLACSO Working Group on emancipatory practices, common goods and methodologies
decolonial alter-global expresses its deep concern and strong rejection of the arrests of 27 people in Guatemala on November 16, including students and academic personalities from the University of San Carlos, USAC.
These arrests, repressive measures, and unfounded criminal charges seek to criminalize the people who have spoken out against irregularities in internal university election procedures and who were alert and mobilized in the face of serious threats to university autonomy, a historical and cultural heritage of Latin American universities.
We especially express our solidarity with our colleague Dr. Eduardo Velásquez, former President of the Latin American Sociological Association, ALAS.
We stand in solidarity with the Guatemalan people who are calling for respect for democracy, human rights, freedom of expression, and academic freedom.
We demand respect for the integrity of all detainees, and we demand their immediate release.
