Solidarity with the Paulo Freire Training Center

The CLACSO Steering Committee hereby condemns the attack by far-right Bolsonaro-supporting groups on the Paulo Freire Training Center, located in the Normandy settlement in Caruaru, Pernambuco, on November 14th.

On that occasion, approximately four people, dressed in yellow, invaded the aforementioned Center and painted the swastika, a Nazi symbol, and the word "myth," referring to the current president of Brazil, on the walls of the school and in various locations around the settlement. They also set fire to the building, and the flames spread to the home of the Center's coordinator, causing material damage to the premises.

We express our concern with the current anti-democratic acts in Brazil due to the non-recognition of the electoral victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, when he democratically won the votes of the majority of the Brazilian population, to assume the Presidency of the Republic from January 1, 2023.

The CLACSO Steering Committee stands in defense of the legitimate exercise of democracy in the different countries of Latin America and the Caribbean, while reaffirming its solidarity with the Paulo Freire Training Center.
