Solidarity with Ecuador
Statement against repression in Ecuador
We condemn the brutal repression carried out by the neoliberal and reactionary government of Daniel Noboa in the context of social mobilizations, especially that directed against indigenous communities, who are being harassed in their own territories.
For the past seven days, protests have been taking place in response to economic adjustment measures—particularly the elimination of the diesel subsidy—which will directly increase the cost of basic necessities and severely impact the poorest sectors of society. The government's response has been the excessive use of state force, not only to criminalize the protests but also to instill terror in the population. We express our outrage at the extrajudicial killing of Indigenous community member Efraín Fuerez, who was shot three times. We strongly condemn the use of the Armed Forces to repress civil demonstrations.
We echo the denunciations of human rights organizations, which have documented serious violations, such as: illegal detentions, ill-treatment, possible cases of torture and enforced disappearance, disproportionate use of force, use of firearms, illegal transfers to prisons—which endanger the lives and safety of protesters—and the illegal freezing of bank accounts belonging to social leaders. We also condemn the criminalization of protest through legal classifications such as terrorism, scorched-earth tactics, and states of emergency decrees reminiscent of the practices of the bloodiest dictatorships in Latin America.
We also denounce the closure of community media outlets, the blocking of internet signals, and power cuts, actions that seek to silence dissenting voices and hinder the recording of human rights violations.
We express our solidarity with peasants, indigenous peoples, students, workers and women who, in the legitimate exercise of their right to resistance, express their disagreement with measures that will only increase poverty.
In these times of uncertainty and terror, we recognize the courage of those who mobilize in defense of life and for better living conditions.
We call on the international community to monitor and guarantee the lives and safety of the protesters. Finally, we demand the opening of channels for dialogue that will allow for a peaceful solution that respects human rights.
