Solidarity with Ana Laura Rivoir (Uruguay) after the attack she suffered

In light of the physical assault suffered by our university colleague, we extend our solidarity to Professor Ana Laura Rivoir of the University of the Republic (Uruguay).

From the CLACSO Working Group on Violence, Security Policies and ResistanceWe express our condemnation of the acts of violence suffered by our colleague, acts of gender, generational and institutional violence.

We especially condemn the violence inherent in the "right of admission" mechanism, the practice of which gives rise to this kind of brutality, most often perpetrated against adolescents and young people. We demand that these unacceptable acts be investigated to the fullest extent and that appropriate institutional and individual accountability be established.

Statement from the University of the Republic (Uruguay) regarding the attack suffered by Professor Ana Rivoir

Montevideo, March 19, 2022

Yesterday, teacher Ana Laura Rivoir was assaulted at the Mandarine Club in Prado after going there to complain about the mistreatment her son had suffered and to request his identification. Although the attack caused her significant injuries, the teacher is out of danger.

The University of the Republic expresses its solidarity with Ana Rivoir and her family, rejects the attacks received and invites reflection on the current climate of violence.

He also hopes for swift action from the Justice system in this particular case and calls on all political, institutional and organized civil society actors to reflect on and commit to peace, a necessary condition for life in a democratic society.

This statement expresses the position of the Working Group Violence, security policies and resistance and not necessarily that of the centers and institutions that make up the CLACSO international network, its Steering Committee or its Executive Secretariat.
