Seminar “University, Society and State”

 Seminar “University, Society and State”

The Council of Rectors of the Montevideo Group Association of Universities (AUGM) will meet on Monday, June 30, and Tuesday, July 1. This is the organization's highest decision-making body, where it will discuss issues related to national, regional, and international contexts, cooperation agreements, public budgets and funding, development, equity and inclusion, scientific systems and higher education, the construction of the Ibero-American knowledge space, and alliances and cooperation among university networks.

The opening day takes place in the Paraninfo of the University of the Republic with the inauguration of the international seminar “University, Society and State,” a forum for reflection by university presidents from the region and international guests and government representatives on the role of public universities in the current political context, the challenges of internationalization, regional development, and Ibero-American scientific cooperation. The Executive Director of CLACSO is participating. Karina Batthyány, in the panel on “Regional development, scientific advances and transformations in higher education” starting at 2:30 p.m.

The academic event concludes with the solemn opening ceremony of the Council of Rectors, attended by the highest authorities of 50 universities from six countries in the region that make up AUGM: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay, and the intervention of the Minister of Education and Culture of Uruguay, José Carlos Mahía.

On the second day of the meeting, the Council of Rectors convened in the Hall of Lost Steps of the Legislative Palace with international guests to strengthen regional and international cooperation and sign agreements of significant importance for the operation and expansion of the network's scope of action. Two agreements between AUGM and its member states were particularly noteworthy. One was with the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation through the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) for the development of research in the region, and the other with the Uruguayan Ministry of Tourism. Also celebrated was the agreement between the General Directorate of Technical and Professional Education (Uruguay) and the National Technological University (Argentina), along with several other agreements aimed at expanding AUGM's work with an Ibero-American perspective: with the Ibero-American Postgraduate Association (AUIP) and the La Rábida Group of Ibero-American Universities (GUILR).

The session of the Executive Council of the Latin American and Caribbean Higher Education Area (ENLACES) begins on Wednesday, July 2nd, at the Chancellery Amphitheater and the Casa Pérsico of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uruguay. The Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs has been invited to the opening of this event, and a conference on regional integration and the role of universities, presented by Gerardo Caetano, will take place prior to the working session. ENLACES is being attended by representatives of university networks from Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, Central America and the Caribbean, as well as representatives from National University Councils and Consortia, student and university staff organizations from the region, and the rectors of the universities from the six countries that participated in the AUGM Rectors' Council.
