Social security and pension systems
The Social Security and Pension Systems Working Group aims to analyze and propose alternatives to the historical and current challenges of social protection systems in Latin America and the Caribbean.
One hundred years after the creation of the first systems, problems of low coverage, inequality and social vulnerability persist, aggravated by economic and health crises, as well as by the growing informal labor market and demographic changes.
The group seeks to understand how transformations in work processes, development models, socio-economic structure, and demographic dynamics affect the performance of social security and pensions.
Furthermore, the group proposes to conduct comparative analyses on the impact of institutional designs and their relationship to globalization and the financialization of regional economies. Another key objective is to evaluate the knowledge and proposals generated by diverse social actors—unions, NGOs, social movements, international organizations, and businesses—to enrich the debate. In this regard, the group promotes the development of sustainable, science-based policies that strengthen knowledge of social security, with the aim of moving towards universal, equitable, and sustainable social protection systems.
