 Russia and Latin America in a globalized world

St. Petersburg State University and the ACR's Institute of Latin America, together with the Bering-Bellinshausen Institute for the Americas, with the support of CLACSO and other institutions, held the event from October 4 to 6. V International Forum “Russia and Ibero-America in the globalized world: history and modernity”.

To address the threats and challenges to democracies in Latin America and the Caribbean, the following points were presented in various panels on Wednesday the 6th:

María Isabel Domínguez, Center for Psychological and Sociological Research of Cuba (CIPS). Generational diversities and inequalities in contemporary Cuban society: continuities.

Montserrat Sagot, University of Costa Rica. Contexts that discard women: inequalities, pandemics and femicides in Central America.

Gabriel Kessler, Argentina, Conicet-UNLP/Idaes UNSAM. The impact of the pandemic in Latin America: social setbacks and increased inequalities.

Patricia Castañeda, Mexico CEIICH-UNAM. Women, inequalities and gender-based violence: on the exacerbation of violent practices and the radicalization of feminist demands.

Agustín Salvia, CONICET-UCA-UBA-CLACSO. Social inequalities exacerbated in Latin America under the COVID-19 scenario.

Blanca Munster Infante, CIEM. Cuba. Well-being and rural women: intertwined inequalities.

Isabel Piper, University of Chile. Social Uprisings and Human Rights Violations in Latin America.

Alejandra Valdés, Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean. Extreme violence against women, femicide and discrimination in Latin America.

Carolina Jiménez, National University of Colombia. The world upside down: Inequalities and social resistance in times of pandemic.

Augusto Castro, Catholic University of Peru. Ethnic discrimination and gender discrimination as threats to democracy in Latin America.

Esteban Torres, National University of Córdoba-CONICET. The dimensions of corruption in Latin America: the new interrelationships of the financial, the criminal and the political.      

Silvia Borelli, Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. Brazilian context: daily violence and squandered rights.

Mabel Thwaites Rey, Buenos Aires University. Rights and right-wing politics in Latin American social and political confrontation.


This Forum is the most representative event in Russia dedicated to the socio-political and economic processes of Latin America, its history, and culture. Its celebration in St. Petersburg, with the participation of prominent politicians, scientists, and journalists from Ibero-American countries and Russia, attracts significant media attention, confirming St. Petersburg University's status as one of the leading centers for Ibero-American studies in Russia.

Objectives of the 2021 Forum:

1. To take a further step towards the development of Russian-Latin American relations in the context of the transition from a bipolar to a multipolar world.

2. Formulate new research approaches on Ibero-American topics.

3. Expand the presence of Russian studies on Latin America within international scientific networks, to promote the development of links between Russian and foreign specialists.
