Restitution of the identity of granddaughter number 139 in Argentina

The year 2025 began with great news: the Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo announced the restitution of identity for another granddaughter who was abducted during the 1976-1983 civic-military dictatorship in Argentina. The 139th granddaughter found is the daughter of Noemí Beatriz Macedo and Daniel Alfredo Inama, who disappeared in 1977.

“The young woman was six or seven months pregnant. Both were seen by survivors at the clandestine detention center known as Club Atlético. In the same operation in which Daniel was kidnapped, other members of the [Marxist-Leninist] Communist Party were also taken: Teresa Galeano, Jorge Georgiev, Beatriz Longhi, and Oscar Rios. All remain disappeared,” explained Estela de Carlotto, President of the association.

“Once again, we must emphasize that we could not have achieved anything alone. This is a collective struggle. The continuity of state policies is fundamental to ending crimes against humanity, such as the appropriation of our grandchildren, and the role of the National Secretariat for Human Rights is central. This is one of the tools built during these 41 years of uninterrupted democracy. This secretariat and its policies must continue to be supported by the government and all of its staff,” added de Carlotto.

Ramón Inama, brother of granddaughter number 139, was present at the press conference and declared: “We in La Plata searched tirelessly for this sister. We thought we had exhausted all avenues and that it was a closed case. However, the Grandmothers have shown us 139 times that it is never the last step, the last hope. (…) Today, we know a little more about who we are, not only her, but all of us, because sometimes reality overwhelms us and other times it gives us an embrace, a certainty, a joy that the world and this country are a possible place of encounter.”

Less than a month ago, on December 27, 2024, the identity of the grandchild number 138, son of Marta Enriqueta Pourtalé and Juan Carlos Villamayor, both Montoneros militants who were detained and disappeared in 1976.

Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo has never ceased its campaign to search for children born in captivity or kidnapped along with their parents.
