In Resisting Neoliberalism: Communities and Autonomies, Pilar Calveiro does not focus on the characteristics of neoliberalism but, as the title suggests, on the possibility and power of community resistance. To this end, she revisits the discussion of the violent and authoritarian features of neoliberalism, developed in previous texts, now emphasizing the formation of power networks that extend beyond the state apparatus. This necessitates shifting the focus of analysis from the state and its direct or indirect responsibilities to neoliberal governmentality, as a denser and more complex web. The aim is to observe the articulation of legal/illegal and public/private power networks that, within neoliberalism, perpetrate various forms of violence aimed at developing veritable politics of fear. Social vulnerability, as well as the various forms of violence inherent in neoliberalism, generates diffuse fears, intentionally directed toward the Other—migrant, terrorist, indigenous person, criminal—and used as a mechanism of population control. The dispossession practices, typical of this model, use fear and even terror to achieve their death objectives.
