Condemnation and solidarity with Miriam Miranda and the Garifuna People

El CLACSO Working Group: Civilizational Crisis, Reconfigurations of Racism, Afro-Latin American Social Movements It expresses its strongest condemnation of the criminal attack perpetrated in the early morning of September 19, 2023, in which at least four armed individuals entered the community of Vallecito, Colón, with the objective of assassinating Miriam Miranda, general coordinator of the Honduran Black Fraternal Organization (OFRANEH). This deplorable event occurred during a visit by members of the Technical Committee of the Protection Mechanism, which adds an additional layer of concern to this situation.

It is clear that this attack is not an isolated incident, but rather part of a larger pattern. plan of genocide and extermination which has been affecting the Garifuna people for far too long. From threats and assassinations to enforced disappearances, the Garifuna people have faced a series of unacceptable aggressions that have only served to increase the levels of impunity and racism they face.

We emphatically demand that the Honduran State guarantee Miriam Miranda's right to life and security and provide all the necessary conditions for her to continue her invaluable work as a defender of the territory, culture, and lives of the Garifuna people. The protection of human rights defenders is an inalienable duty of any state that considers itself democratic and respectful of fundamental rights.

We stand in unwavering solidarity with Miriam Miranda and the Garifuna people in this time of crisis and reaffirm our commitment to fighting all forms of racism, violence, and persecution that threaten the lives and dignity of Afro-Latin American communities. We call on the international community to join in this condemnation and press for immediate action to end this escalation of violence and guarantee a safe and just future for the Garifuna people.
