Condemnation of the acts of repression outside the Congress in Argentina
From the CLACSO Working Group on Critical Disability Studies We express our condemnation of the acts of repression and violence carried out on February 1, 2024, outside the Argentine National Congress, while the "Omnibus Law" project proposed by the government of Javier Milei, which is based on a neoliberal adjustment model, was being discussed.
We hold the current government, as well as Security Minister Patricia Bullrich, responsible for the acts of violence and repression perpetrated by the national security forces against the public. Through tear gas and rubber bullets fired at face level, they endangered the lives of those peacefully demonstrating outside the building. Among those attacked and injured are journalists, members of parliament, retirees, and workers; one of them with serious eye damage and a possible eye loss, whose condition is critical. There is precedent for these forms of mutilation (loss of eyes) and various forms of physical assault in demonstrations in neighboring countries such as Chile and Colombia, which have left scars on the bodies of those denouncing inequality, oppression, and injustice in our Latin America. This action by the government constitutes a violation of human rights.
We reject the use of repression as a systematic practice against the legitimate demonstrations of the Argentine people, and we maintain that practices of mutilation, aggression and other forms of physical violence go against all democratic organization and threaten the social life of the people.
criminalizing the right to protest.
We invite the various CLACSO Working Groups and collective organizations, as well as all those who wish to express their views on these acts of repression and violence, to endorse and support this statement.
