Condemnation of the crime against humanity committed against migrants in Melilla
Given the extreme gravity of the events that occurred on June 24 in Melilla, the CLACSO Working Group: Civilizational Crisis, Reconfigurations of Racism and Afro-Latin American Movements subscribes to the declaration prepared by the Simon Bolivar Institute of Venezuela.
This document expresses our profound condemnation of the massacre and clearly describes the violent stance of the governments of Morocco and Spain—both, coincidentally, referred to as kingdoms, a stark contrast in their racist practices and political structures. We call upon all working groups, intellectuals, and activists of Afro-descendant and African movements to unite and denounce this massacre on every front.
Statement from the Simón Bolívar Institute
The Simón Bolívar Institute for Peace and Solidarity among Peoples (ISB) expresses its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the African victims of the atrocious murder perpetrated by police forces on June 24, 2022, which responds to the logic of death that underlies European and Moroccan migration policy.
With this massacre, a crime against humanity has been committed, adding to a series of xenophobic and genocidal policies that are implemented daily against African brothers and sisters who try to emigrate to Europe.
The United Nations system, all human rights organizations, and various international and national actors are urged to prioritize life, social justice, and peace and to become urgently involved in promoting an effective response that will permanently eliminate this cycle of death and dehumanizing poverty to which young people, men, women, and families of the Mother Continent are condemned.
