I condemn the actions of the United States Supreme Court that overturned the Roe v. Wade decision.

I condemn the actions of the United States Supreme Court that overturned the Roe v. Wade decision.

From the CLACSO Working Group on Feminisms, Resistance and Emancipation, in light of the decision by the Supreme Court of the United States that overturns the Roe v. Wade decision, issued on June 24, 2022

WE EXPRESS

The Roe v. Wade decision, 50 years ago, enabled both the constitutional right to abortion and the institutionalization of public policies throughout the United States, as well as the existence of women's organizations, clinics, and comprehensive care services with public funds.

The revocation on June 24 empowers states in the US to regulate, prohibit, and disable these rights, in addition to eliminating funding for all institutions built to guarantee women's right to abortion, exposing them once again to unsafe abortions and maternal deaths related to these practices.

The recall will affect all women in the United States, and especially impoverished, Black, Latina, and migrant women; but also women and girls in Latin America due to the demonstration effect and the influence of the most conservative Catholic movements, joined by neo-Pentecostals who have been imposing their fundamentalist agendas in all Latin American countries, further limiting and weakening the guarantee of sexual and reproductive rights for women, through campaigns such as "don't mess with my children," "pro-life," and in favor of the unborn, which marked the institutional political debate, generating a chain reaction that still has effects in several countries.

This is despite the harsh realities that place unsafe abortion as one of the main causes of maternal death in this region and one of the main causes of forced pregnancies in girls under 14 years of age, as well as infant mortality for both child mothers and their daughters.

The reversal will weaken public policies such as the morning-after pill, comprehensive sex education, and access to legal abortion by invoking the claim of conscientious objection. These ideas have been promoted by neoconservative think tanks located in the United States, which are represented in the decision that overturned Roe v. Wade.

This decision will have a strengthening impact on the regional groups and networks that have been created to deny women's rights and limit the emancipatory movements of the new feminist waves that wave the green scarf in the streets as a sign of power, independence and autonomy of our bodies.

From the CLACSO Working Group on Feminisms, Resistance and Emancipation We call upon all groups, social movements, and feminist movements to join in the demonstrations rejecting this decision and any attempt to limit the progress we have made to date in the world and in Latin America in particular.
