Condemnation of the attempted coup in Brazil, in defense of democracy
On Sunday, January 8, 2023, one week after the inauguration of democratically elected President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, thousands of people occupied the buildings of the three branches of government in Brasília, Brazil. There are indications that people had camped out for days beforehand, and that a well-funded operation was in place to facilitate this attempted coup. It is worth noting that this was likely a continuation of the pro-coup demonstrations that followed the second round of elections on October 30, 2022.
The authorities responsible for preventing and then stopping the invasions failed to do so, and their delay posed a serious threat to democracy and caused damage to public property. In this regard, we are demonstrating against the coup, demanding respect for the election results and, above all, for democracy itself.
Just like CLACSO Working Groups on Critical Studies of Rural Development and Feminisms, Resistance and EmancipationWe demand accountability and punishment for all those responsible—financially, those who ordered the actions, and the agents who acted—with civil trials for the military personnel involved. We also hold former President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) responsible and request his extradition from the US to Brazil so that he too can be tried and held accountable, as well as the governor of Brasília, who failed in his duty to guarantee the security of the three branches of government. Furthermore, we call for the removal of those responsible members of the current government who were negligent, such as the Minister of Defense.
As the people demand, there cannot be amnesty for those who acted against the country and democracy.
We celebrate that the governors of the Brazilian states and the global institutions have spoken out in favor of democracy, demanding respect for the sovereign will of the Brazilian people.

Not on Sunday, January 8, 2023, one week after the inauguration of the democratically elected president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, thousands of people invaded the properties of two three powers in Brasília, Brazil. There are indications that people camped days before the event and there was some financed logistics for this coup attempt to happen. It should be noted that this is probably due to the continuity of the coup demonstrations that occurred later in the second round of the electoral process on October 30, 2022.
The agents that should act to prevent and impede these invasions do not do so and their delay is a serious threat to democracy and destruction of public patrimony. In this sense, we protest against the attempted coup, guaranteeing that the results of the elections are respected and, especially, democracy.
We demand accountability and punishment of all responsible persons – financially, principals and acting agents – with civil jurisdiction to the military involved. We also hold former President Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) responsible and request his extradition from the United States to Brazil so that he is also held accountable, as well as the Governor of Brasilia, who did not have to guarantee the security of two three powers.
We even demand that the people responsible for the current government, who are omitted as the defense minister, be dismissed.
As the people demand, there is no possibility of anistia for the people who act against the democratic country.
We celebrate that the governors of two Brazilian states and global institutions have demonstrated in favor of democracy, demanding respect for the sovereignty of the Brazilian people.
