Condemnation of the repression against the people of Jujuy, Argentina

From the CLACSO Working Group: What work for what future?  We express our strong condemnation of the repression against the people of Jujuy (Argentina) by the provincial security forces.

The violent response of Gerardo Morales's government to the legitimate protest that began with teachers' and state employees' demands for higher wages is unacceptable. This protest has since united all sectors in denouncing the undemocratic procedures used to pass a constitutional reform that restricts rights enshrined in the National Constitution and International Human Rights Treaties in that province, particularly regarding the respect, promotion, and effective guarantee of the rights to freedom of expression, assembly, and protest, as well as all social, cultural, and environmental rights. It is crucial to understand that this reform aims to pave the way for a transnational business model based on the exploitation of natural resources and human labor, which requires the trampling of the rights of Indigenous communities, the persecution of organizations, and the disciplining of the population. We affirm the right of individuals and groups to demonstrate and express their rejection of reforms that, like this one, represent a serious setback for the mechanisms of recognition, protection, and guarantee of human rights.

From our Working Group we express our rejection and concern about the violation of Human Rights and the basic conditions for democracy and we urge the creation of spaces for dialogue and agreement, with respect for democratic processes in decision-making.

What job for what future?
